Spotlight – Dalen

Meet Dalen, our dynamic Inventory Specialist at Harvest of Athens! With a keen eye for detail, Dalen plays an important role in ensuring our inventory management is nothing short of seamless. Join us in welcoming Dalen to his new role as he keeps our operations running smoothly and makes sure there’s precision in everything!

Q: With the start of a new year, what aspect of your role at the dispensary are you most excited about?

I’m most excited to be able to listen for new customer recommendations and continue to innovate our online menu, giving more accuracy and more detail on our products.

Q: What was your proudest moment from your work at Harvest in the past year?

My proudest moment would have to be receiving this promotion from Dispensary Associate to Inventory Supervisor within my first 6 months of work. When I came to Harvest I knew I was with good people who saw my potential, and that I could be successful with the fantastic team we’ve assembled.

Q: What's one thing you wish more people knew about the benefits of medical cannabis?

Medical cannabis comes in all forms, from flower, to oils, topicals and tinctures, drinks, gummies and even chocolates. Medical cannabis edible items can also be dietary-restriction friendly such as the vegan diet. This leaves lots of room to experiment with different forms of the same substance in order to best fit your day-to-day needs.

Q: As you start inventory management, what strategies have you found work the best?

What I’ve learned throughout my time as Inventory Supervisor, is that everyone has a different strategy to accomplish the same organizing goal, and putting the team first means that everyone has less work to be done so long as we’re all working together. My personal strategy though, is slow and steady wins the race.

Q:Is there an unexpected item that is selling out the fastest?

I definitely have to give it to the Riviera Creek Infused Riv sticks, they’ve been in and out of the store faster than anything else, and in my experience, nothing else touches that level of potency at that price!

Q:Winter is in full swing. Do you have any favorite cannabis products or strains that you recommend for relaxation or cozy evenings?

This winter is a COLD one, so I’d recommend settling down at night with a nice cup of the UBGOOD hot cocoa mix and a Kiva chocolate bar in order to best enjoy the season. Though the Butterfly Effect infusion powder mixed into tea still is a nightly go-to.

Q: What would you be voted “Most Likely” for in a Harvest Yearbook?

Most likely to join a band.

Q:If you could teleport anywhere in the world right now, where would you go?

I’d go to Okinawa, Japan, although I’d need to bring my grandma with me since it’s where she grew up, I’d really love to see all of Japan using the public train system in a single trip.

Q:What are some of your New Year’s Resolutions?

Exercise more, drink more water, and save money but don’t deprive.

Q:Would you rather always be cold or always be hot? Why?

I’d rather always be cold, because I can always bundle myself up but I can only un-bundle myself so much before someone has to call the police.

Q:What’s something you couldn’t live without?

I absolutely couldn’t live without my animals. I have two cats named Oatmeal and Tofu, and an Australian shepherd named Oliver.

Q:I think I’d choose to be Naruto Uzumaki, pretty self-explanatory, if you know you know.

Inside the Brain: Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy

In the pursuit of health advocacy, some battles are unique, affecting the center of our existence – our brains. Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a condition that demands our attention. As we unite to raise awareness on CTE Awareness Day, it's crucial to delve into the depths of this condition, its impact, and the imperative need for awareness and research.

Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE) is a complex and progressive neurodegenerative condition that has seen an increase in attention during recent years, especially in the worlds of contact sports and military service. In the state of Ohio, CTE is recognized as a qualifying medical condition under the OMMCP. It’s characterized by the build up of abnormal tau protein in the brain, which may be triggered by repetitive head traumas, like concussions. While the symptoms of CTE may not come about immediately, the condition gradually unfolds over time, leading to changes in mood, behavior, and thought (1)

Recent advancements in CTE research have propelled our understanding of this medical condition forward. Improved diagnostic tools, such as advanced imaging and biomarker studies, allow for earlier detection and intervention (2). Preventative measures, such as rule changes in contact sports, protective equipment innovations, and increased research funding, show the many approaches that are being taken to handle the complexities of CTE (3).

The exploration of medical marijuana as a treatment adds a promising aspect to ongoing efforts, and allows for symptom management and improving the quality of life for those affected by this qualifying condition. As awareness grows and collaborative research efforts continue, the hope is that these advancements will lead to breakthroughs that transform the landscape of CTE diagnosis, prevention, and treatment.

Through our exploration of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy, we’re reminded of our commitment to better understand the challenges faced by people with this condition and to create a positive impact in our community.

5 Outstanding Ways to Celebrate MLK Day in Your Community

This year, Harvest of OH is celebrating MLK Day and as we commemorate the enduring legacy of Martin Luther King Jr., we realize there’s no better way to honor his life than by actively contributing to the well-being of our communities to create a meaningful impact. Here are five inspiring ways to spread joy and create a more vibrant community:

Community Clean-Up:

There’s a unique sense of camaraderie that comes with working together towards a common goal. Organize a community clean-up event where residents come armed with gloves and trash bags to rejuvenate local parks, streets, or communal spaces. This not only enhances the physical environment but also fosters a shared commitment to the well-being of the community.

Kindness Ripple Effect:

Initiate a kindness campaign that encourages residents to perform random acts of kindness throughout the day. Distribute cards or flyers suggesting simple yet impactful acts like offering a friendly smile, helping a neighbor, or leaving positive notes in public spaces. Watch as these small acts create a ripple effect, uplifting the spirits of everyone involved.

Cultural Potluck Celebration:

Break down barriers and celebrate diversity by organizing a community potluck that showcases the rich tapestry of cultures within your neighborhood. Encourage residents to bring dishes that represent their heritage, fostering understanding and appreciation for the vibrant backgrounds that make up your community.

Community Storytelling Gathering:

Embrace the power of storytelling to strengthen the bonds within your community. Host a gathering where residents can share personal stories that highlight unity, resilience, and overcoming challenges. Whether through spoken word, written narratives, or visual presentations, storytelling fosters empathy and connection.

Artistic Expressions of Unity:

Tap into the creative talents of your community by organizing an art project that reflects the themes of unity, equality, and positive change. Encourage local artists to contribute murals, sculptures, or other visual representations that celebrate the shared values of Martin Luther King Jr. These artistic expressions not only beautify public spaces but also serve as constant reminders of the community’s commitment to a brighter future.

Spotlight – Jared

Harvest of OH’s Dispensary Associates are known for their friendly dispositions and vast knowledge of the industry and products. Jared is an outstanding team member thanks to his ability to connect with our patients and ensuring that the work he does is exceptional every day.

Q: As we wrap up 2023, what lessons have you harvested from your journey working in the medical cannabis industry this past year?

Medical cannabis patients come in wide varieties, with different wants and needs and knowledge levels. So I don’t assume or recommend products based on my tolerance and taste, without first getting a baseline feel for the patient’s experience with cannabis products.

Q: What's your secret sauce for staying in the loop about all the products we have on our dispensary shelves?

Asking questions! Whether it be a co-worker, Brand Ambassador from another company, or our patients themselves. That way, I have more of a broad knowledge and not just first-hand experiences since cannabis can affect people differently. I was always told the dumbest questions are the ones you don’t ask!

Q: What’s the absolute highlight of being a Dispensary Associate?

For sure our regulars! Being able to chat frequently and give recommendations, then receive feedback on the next visit of said recommendations, in order for us to better serve them is amazing!

Q: What is your favorite Harvest memory that brings a smile to your face?

In all honesty, finding out I got hired. Cannabis has been a part of my life for a while now and I really wanted to get into this industry– that way I would be able to interact with and help people on a day to day basis.

Q: Reflecting on your journey at Harvest from the beginning until now, in what ways have you personally evolved?

Just by getting my foot in the door at Harvest, I feel as if I have brand new windshield wipers, and I’ve got a clear vision of where I’d like to go in this industry and my future.

Q:With the recent passage of Issue 2, what exciting developments do you hope to witness at Harvest of OH in the coming years?

The development of recreational dispensaries is something I’ve experienced in various states, and it’s a whole different ball game. It’ll be interesting to see how Ohio approaches the industry, allowing dispensaries to have dual licenses for both medical and recreational sales and operations.

Q: If you had the power to bring one mythical creature to life, which one would you choose?

I would choose a Pegasus.

Q:What’s an awesome hidden talent you have up your sleeve?

Dance move : The worm. Party trick : Juggling.

Q:If the seasons were constant and never changed, which one would you prefer to experience all the time?

I would say spring.

Q:Throughout your life, what has been your proudest achievement?

Being a good/fun uncle. Cheesy? Yes. But I genuinely love being “Uncle Bub” or “Ubba” for short. I could go on and on about my nieces and nephew!

Q:What’s a song that’s been playing in your head recently?

Gold on the Ceiling by The Black Keys

Q:If you were to write a book about your life, what would the title be, and what genre would it belong to?

Glaucoma Unveiled: Understanding, Prevention, and Hope

As we step into Glaucoma Awareness Month, we shine a light on a condition that, despite its impact on millions worldwide, is not always known. Often referred to as the "silent thief of sight," glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve connecting the eye to the brain. In the state of Ohio, glaucoma is recognized as a qualifying medical condition under the OMMCP.

Typically, when people mention "glaucoma," they are referring to open-angle glaucoma, which is the most common in the United States. This type of glaucoma occurs when the drainage channels in the eye gradually become clogged over time, resulting in increased pressure within the eye and potential harm to the optic nerve (2)

Regular eye exams are crucial when it comes to catching this “silent thief”, allowing opthamologists to detect glaucoma in its early stages before damage may occur. Your eye doctor may complete the following tests to detect glaucoma (3):

  • Tonometry – testing for inner eye pressure levels
  • Ophthalmoscopy – dilated eye exam testing for the shape and color of the optic nerve
  • Perimetry – examining the eye’s field of vision
  • Gonioscopy – looking at the angle in the eye where the iris meets the cornea
  • Pachymetry – examining the thickness of the cornea

The gradual nature of glaucoma, spanning over many years, makes it challenging for those affected to detect early symptoms as they may not notice anything different than usual. However, in some cases, individuals may notice subtle changes like a gradual loss of peripheral vision or experience symptoms like blurred vision and rainbow-colored circles around lights (2)

Encouragingly, strides are being made in the fight against glaucoma. Treatment options, including medications to reduce eye pressure, surgical interventions, and the use of medical marijuana, are available and improving. Clinical studies have shown hopeful results, indicating that medical marijuana usage can reduce intraocular pressure, along with conventional treatments (1).

Throughout this month, we advocate for routine eye examinations and support those impacted by glaucoma. Take a proactive step towards clearer sight – schedule your eye exam today and invest in a brighter, sharper tomorrow. Your eyes deserve the care, so don't wait; book your appointment now!

“Kwanzaa Crash Course: Understanding the Seven Principles and Symbols”

"Kwanzaa Crash Course: Understanding the Seven Principles and Symbols"

As the year draws to a close, we come together to celebrate a wide range of holidays and enjoy festivities. Among these celebrations, Kwanzaa stands out as a meaningful and vibrant observance that honors African American and Pan-African family, community, and culture. Kwanzaa Awareness Week, dedicated to spreading knowledge and understanding of this unique celebration, provides an opportunity for individuals of different backgrounds to come together in the spirit of unity.

Kwanzaa, which means "first fruits" in Swahili, was created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way for African Americans to connect with their roots and celebrate their shared history and values. The week-long celebration, occurring on December 26th through January 1st, focuses on seven core principles known as the Nguzo Saba. These principles serve as a guide for reflection and action throughout the week.

These are the seven principles of Kwanzaa in the order they are followed, along with their representative meanings, according to the official Kwanzaa website.

1.) Umoja (unity): "To strive for and maintain unity in the family, community, nation, and race."

2.) Kujichagulia (self-determination): "To define ourselves, name ourselves, create for ourselves, and speak for ourselves."

3.) Ujima (collective work and responsibility): "To build and maintain our community together and make our brother's and sister's problems our problems and to solve them together."

4.) Ujamaa (cooperative economics): "To build and maintain our own stores, shops, and other businesses and to profit from them together."

5.) Nia (purpose): "To make our collective vocation the building and development of our community in order to restore our people to their traditional greatness."

6.) Kuumba (creativity): "To always do as much as we can, in the way we can, in order to leave our community more beautiful and beneficial than we inherited it."

7.) Imani (faith): "To believe with all our heart in our people, our parents, our teachers, our leaders, and the righteousness and victory of our struggle."

Kwanzaa Awareness Week plays a crucial role in fostering a deeper understanding of this cultural celebration. It encourages individuals from diverse backgrounds to engage in discussions, attend events, and explore the traditions associated with Kwanzaa. By promoting awareness, we not only honor the African American heritage but also build bridges between communities, fostering a sense of respect and appreciation for the rich cultural mosaic that makes our world so beautifully diverse. So, let's come together during Kwanzaa Awareness Week, light the Kinara, and embrace the values that unite us all in the spirit of love, community, and cultural pride.

Spotlight – Allison

Our new Post-Harvest Manager, Allison, has a proven track record of excellence at Harvest Grows. Allison’s passion for quality, along with her deep understanding of the industry and cannabis production, means so much to us and brings something truly unique to our cultivation site.

Q: November brings Medical Cannabis Awareness Week. What do you want people to know about the medical cannabis industry?

I believe that there is still a big misconception surrounding medical marijuana. What I would like people to know about the industry is how important it is to our patients and how many individuals it truly helps. There are so many people still serving life sentences for the criminalization of marijuana, and it’s truly heartbreaking.

Q: As you step into your new position, what goals are you most excited to implement?

First, I’m most excited about enhancing teamwork throughout the whole facility and making sure everyone is on the same page so we can work as a solidified unit. Second, I’ve set a personal goal to learn as much about everything and anything that I can. I want to gain as much knowledge as possible in this industry, in every department, and gain many new skills. Third, I would like to improve performance on the cultivation site—more specifically, quality, quantity, and overall work environment.

Q: What is the unique strength that our cultivation site has?

I think the unique strength this cultivation site has is our team. We have such dedicated and hard-working individuals here who are truly invested in the industry and in getting quality products to patients. Our staff takes things in stride and makes sure to bring their best selves to work every day.

Q: Have you run into any unexpected challenges that actually turned into great learning experiences?

I’ve had my fair share of bumps in the road while working through different positions in the company and learning new skills and processes as I go. I like to take everything as a learning experience, so I believe I wouldn’t have as much knowledge and understanding as I do now without learning from the challenges that I’ve faced. I’m always eager to learn more about this industry and new ways to improve my work or the day-to-day workflow of the facility.

Q: What is the team dynamic at Harvest Grows like? How have you seen it develop since you’ve started?

Coming from the restaurant industry to Harvest Grows, the team dynamic here is very refreshing. It’s more like a close family environment with less stress and hassle. Anyone I’ve ever encountered at Harvest Grows has always been so kind and welcoming since the day I started. I was very nervous at first to come into a new industry and meet new people; however, that feeling was eased within a few hours of my first day. Everyone I work with is very goal-oriented and hard-working, so we all just come together to complete whatever task is needed and still have fun at the same time.

Q: Which developments in the medical marijuana industry during the past few years have you found most exciting?

One recent development in the industry that I have found most exciting is medical marijuana and its effects on cancer cells. I’ve read a lot about how researchers are finding through animal and human trials that when using phytocannabinoids, which have anti-cancer properties, they were able to reduce tumor growth rates in patients suffering from aggressive types of brain cancer.

Q: If you could meet anyone in this world, alive or deceased, who would you choose to meet? Why?

If I could meet anyone in this world, alive or deceased, it’d have to be Bob Marley. Ever since I was a young child, I always believed his music to be so soothing yet powerful. He was such a wise and humble human, and he was an avid advocate for marijuana and for people.

Q: What are your must-have items for travel? Why?

My must-have items for travel would be: twice as many clothes as I need (just to be prepared because I’m always indecisive about my outfits), road snacks to keep you from getting hungry, and music. Music is probably the most important thing for me to have because you must have your own personal concerts to keep yourself entertained.

Q: What fictional character do you relate to the most?

The fictional character that I relate to the most would probably be SpongeBob! It’s always been my favorite cartoon since I was a kid, but I relate in quite a few ways. I consider myself a positive person like SpongeBob, and I’m constantly laughing at something. Another way I can relate to him is through my love for this career. I love my job, and I’m always excited to come to work and to learn something new. We also share the same birth month and cancer horoscope!

Q: If you could change your voice to any accent, which accent would you choose?

If I could change my voice to an accent, it would probably be just a normal city accent. I was born and raised in West Virginia, so I’ve always been told how thick of a country accent I have.

Q: Are there any foods or recipes you’ve been meaning to try?

I would really like to try this recipe I got from a tik-tok creator. This guy recreates dishes from the tv show Soprano’s and he made Carmella’s famous lasagna so I want to make it myself.

Q: If animals could talk, what species do you think would have the most to say?

If animals could talk, I think that dogs would have the most to say. They are such energetic, innocent, and loyal animals. Most follow their owners everywhere and always want attention and to be included. They get to experience so many things with humans, and I feel like they already judge our every move, so I think they would have so much to say.

Understanding IBD: Crohns and Colitis Awareness Week

Understanding IBD: Crohns and Colitis Awareness Week

As we enter Crohn's and colitis Awareness Week, it's time to shine a spotlight on the millions of individuals around the world bravely facing the challenges of inflammatory bowel diseases (IBD). Running from December 1st to December 7th, this awareness week serves as a powerful platform to educate, advocate, and unite in the fight against Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis.

IBD is an umbrella term for conditions with chronic inflammation of tissues in the digestive tract. In Ohio, IBD qualifies as a medical condition under the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (OMMCP). The two most common medical conditions under that umbrella are: Crohn's disease and Ulcerative colitis. Ulcerative colitis specifically impacts the lining of the large intestine (colon), while Crohn's disease can affect any segment of the small or large intestine causing irritation not only to the lining but also to deeper layers. As these conditions affect the digestive system, they may lead to inflammation and a range of symptoms, such as abdominal pain, diarrhea, fatigue, and weight loss. Due to this, IBD can significantly impact the quality of life for those affected, making awareness and support very important.

Facts about IBD
● Anyone can get IBD, with 1 in 100 Americans being affected by this condition and around 70,000 new patients being diagnosed each year.

● Men and women are equally likely to be affected by IBD

● Damaged areas of Crohn’s disease appear in patches that are next to areas of healthy tissue while damaged parts from Ulcerative colitis travel continuously

● While we don’t know the exact cause of IBD, it occurs because of a weakened immune system.

Crohn's and colitis Awareness Week plays a significant role in addressing the misconceptions surrounding IBD and fostering empathy and awareness for those living with these conditions. By highlighting the challenges faced by individuals with Crohn's and colitis, we can work towards breaking down stigmas, increasing understanding, and promoting a more inclusive and supportive society.

35 Years of World AIDS Day

35 Years of World AIDS Day

In 1988, World AIDS Day marked a historic moment as the first-ever international day dedicated to global health. Since then, December 1st has become a day when individuals worldwide unite to honor those affected by HIV/AIDS. This annual observance not only honors the lives impacted by the virus but also serves as a crucial platform for raising awareness, sharing information, testimonials, and exploring innovative treatment options.

In Ohio, a positive HIV or AIDS status qualifies as a medical condition under the Ohio Medical Marijuana Control Program (OMMCP). According to the Ohio Department of Health, there were 25,419 individuals living with HIV in Ohio in 2022. Notably, half of this population had received a diagnosis of AIDS as well. With the advancements of medicine, individuals diagnosed with HIV/AIDS are able to live long and healthy lives, which is why it is important to continue to inform the world about preventative measures such as medications that prevent transmission. It’s our hope that through raising awareness on dedicated global and local health days such as World AIDS Day, that those affected by these conditions have a community support system filled with crucial resources.

Under the message of "Let Communities Lead," this year's theme emphasizes the huge impact of community engagement. As demonstrated by the successful passing of Issue 2 in Ohio, the collective strength of communities is a force to be reckoned with. When communities actively seek AIDS funding, advocate for educational programs, and promote prevention initiatives, they contribute significantly to the fight against HIV/AIDS.

As we observe World AIDS Day, let us recognize the power that communities hold in shaping the narrative and response to HIV/AIDS. By fostering community-driven initiatives, we can make meaningful strides in education, prevention, and support for those affected by this global health challenge. Together, we can contribute to a future where HIV/AIDS is better understood, effectively managed, and, ultimately, eradicated.

To learn more about how you can raise awareness for HIV/AIDS, visit the World AIDS Day website! While advancements in treatments have drastically lowered the fatality risks of breast cancer, there are still side effects that come with the disease. Breast cancer, along with many other cancers, may often result in pain for the patient, which can include joint and muscle aches, overall discomfort, and stiffness. Pain management is one of the most common reasons for breast cancer patients to use medical marijuana. According to “A Coala-T-Cannabis Survey Study of Breast Cancer Patients’ Use of Cannabis Before, During, and After Treatment”, 75% of surveyed breast cancer patients reported that it was extremely or very helpful in relieving their symptoms.

Research for medical cannabis and its effects on breast cancer is still ongoing, so speak to a doctor if you’d like to learn more about medical marijuana as a treatment option for you. As we discover more and more, we hope to create a future without breast cancer.
